RHI Magnesita was awarded a significant contract to design and supply refractory linings for two DRI Open Bath furnaces (“DRI-OBF”). These furnaces will be installed by SMS group, the original equipment manufacturer (OEM), as part of Thyssenkrupp’s flagship €2 billion, 2.3 Mtpa green steel project at its Duisburg site in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany.
Set to commence production in 2027, the Duisburg project will initially use natural gas for direct reduction of iron ore. Eventually, the process will transition to hydrogen, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions to nearly zero. RHI Magnesita’s role as the refractory supplier to the OEM underscores the company's strategic positioning as a leading provider of refractory linings and services for DRI-OBF, EAF, and BOF converters, which are critical for the large-scale adoption of green steel production globally.
This contract not only represents substantial new project revenue for RHI Magnesita but also validates its strategy to support the green steel industry, emphasizing its commitment to sustainability and innovation in steel manufacturing.
