Emergency Mock Drill Puts Safety Measures to the Test
On September 24, 2024, a fire incident occurred at a major steel plant in Visakhapatnam, prompting an essential plant-level emergency mock drill. This drill simulated a Liquid Nitrogen leak at an Air Separation Plant within the Utilities Department, aimed at testing the facility’s response systems in a high-risk scenario. Two individuals involved in the exercise experienced cold burns and asphyxiation while conducting maintenance tasks. We are pleased to report that all RHI Magnesita employees and contractual partners working at the plant were safe, with no injuries reported.
Exemplary Emergency Response
During this critical incident, one of our dedicated team members, Basheer Shariff, a supervisor in our application team, displayed outstanding courage and initiative. He responded swiftly, rescuing an injured individual from the ladle bay, where molten metal posed additional risks. Basheer ensured the safety of the injured person, called for an ambulance, and provided essential first aid, all while coordinating with the facility's emergency response team. His quick and effective actions highlighted the depth of his training and his commitment to safety.
